Despite tighter controls, asbestos is still getting into the UK whether it’s through floor tiles from Turkey or fire doors from China.

And it seems the problem is no better in the US, where it was reported in the news just a few weeks ago that asbestos fibres had been discovered in children’s crayons and toy crime lab kits imported from China.

A private lab hired by the EWG Action Fund, a sister organisation of the Environmental Working Group found traces of asbestos in four of the 28 boxes of crayons it tested and two children’s crime scene toy fingerprint kits.

Affected crayons included those branded Disney Micky Mouse and Power Rangers purchased at two retailers Dollar Tree and Party City and the fingerprint toy kits were purchased from online retailers amazon.com and toysRUs.com.

The EWG Action Fund does not specify how much asbestos was found in the crayons and toys but this is irrelevant, as no amount of asbestos can be safely inhaled by children or adults.
