It’s fantastic to be able to support local community projects, particularly when they’re being run by our employees. As a result, we’re proud to announce our sponsorship of a new boxing club in Huddersfield founded by ASKAMS analyst, Wayne Carmichael.
Thanks to a £3,000 sponsorship package from ASKAMS, the new boxing club has been kitted out with punching bags and a boxing ring, encouraging and enabling people of all ages from the area to take up the sport and train.
Commenting on the sponsorship, Wayne said: “When I decided to open this boxing club with my cousin Chris, from scratch, I asked our managing director Stewart McNicholl if he would support us; he didn’t hesitate in saying yes. The idea of the boxing club is to help keep youngsters in the area off the streets by giving them somewhere to go and something to do, as well as give them the facilities to keep fit. There’s also a women’s boxercise class and professional boxers use the club to train.
“ASKAMS paid for the boxing ring and six bags and we funded the other three bags ourselves; it isn’t a government funded club so whatever profit we make will be ploughed back into it to pay for the rent and equipment such as gloves and skipping ropes etc.”
One high profile boxer training at the club is Tyrone Nurse who, on Saturday 18 July, drew against Chris Jenkins when they both fought for the British light-welterweight belt at Manchester Arena, in front of the Sky Sports cameras, wearing ASKAMS sponsored kit.
Wayne, who lives in Huddersfield and works as an analyst in ASKAMS Warrington office, continues: “I had no expectations of sponsorship but thought it was worth asking the question with this being a great local cause, and I was delighted when I got a positive answer. The boxing club is a work in progress and we look forward to seeing lots of people enjoy it.”
