Here at ASKAMS we take our CSR promises very seriously and to this end, we’ve just helped fund the refurbishment of a dilapidated shop unit in Morpeth into a high quality office hosting a new employability and jobs skills service.
Dozens of people gave up their time to transform the former Stobhill Community Link building last year and the new iLearn Centre was officially opened in December by Wansbeck MP, Ian Lavery.
The project was pulled together by ISOS Housing staff who worked alongside volunteers from the business world, public sector and voluntary sector to bring it to fruition by providing and installing new fittings such as lighting and flooring – DIY SOS style.
Warwick Durnian, community investment office at ISOS said: “This couldn’t have been done without ASKAMS’s very generous donation, which has helped us provide a professional and vibrant centre that is set to make a huge difference to the community.”
Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery said: “This project shows what can be achieved by organisations working together – hand in hand – in the best interests of the local community.
“People often get the impression that everyone in Morpeth has plenty, and it is a successful town, but here in Stobhill there are parts of the area which are in the 10 per cent of the most socially deprived parts of the country.
“Hopefully, people using this centre will get the self-belief, the understanding and the support to enable them to achieve something in life.”
The initiative is aimed at improving employment opportunities for residents in the Stobhill area of Morpeth, where most homes are owned and managed by ISOS Housing.
The iLearn Centre will provide support to local residents to improve their English, Maths, ICT and employability skills.
Commenting on ASKAMS’s involvement, managing director Stewart McNicholl said “Our CSR strategy requires a number of elements that are very important to us and this project ticked all the boxes in terms of community engagement, employability, training and apprenticeships and community regeneration. It is even planning on a garden outside, so has managed to satisfy our environmental demands too.
“It was fantastic to see the community come together to make this happen and I wish the iLearn Centre the very best of luck for the future.”
